Two of these three are the least exciting gifts in this guide. They are also the ones that quietly remove a small daily annoyance, which is worth more in February than another soft toy.

Clothes in newborn size. Most babies are in that size for a few weeks, sometimes not at all. If you want to buy clothes, buy six to nine months in the season it will actually be.
Toys for a newborn. A baby under three months is not playing yet. Anything with lights and sound goes in a cupboard until it does not fit the child any more.
A full pack of newborn diapers. They may not fit for long and the hospital usually sends some home. A bigger size is the more useful gift and nobody is offended by it.

Ask the parents for one item instead. A carrier, a decent pump, a video monitor. Something above the price a single guest would spend, which is exactly the gap a group can fill.

No, and it is usually the gift they remember. Recovery supplies, a decent nursing pillow or a meal delivered in week three all land better than a ninth soft toy, because nobody else thinks to buy them.
There is no set amount, and joining with other guests is the better move at any budget. One bigger useful item, chosen by the parents, beats several small ones that end up stored in a cupboard.
