Wooden toys are having a moment again, and there is a slightly awkward reason for it.
Most of it is us. We miss the barn, the bead maze, the little tin pans. Nostalgia sells hard in November, and a lot of it gets bought for the grown-up standing in the aisle.
Which is worth saying out loud, because it changes what you should buy. The old toys that genuinely last are not the ones you loved. They are the ones that do nothing on their own.

These are the toys that keep coming back, and it is not sentiment that keeps them alive. It is that they are props, not performances.

Toy pots and pans work the same way, with one extra pull. Small children want to do what you are doing, not a smaller version of it. Metal pans clatter like real ones, and that detail matters to them more than it does to us.
The sweep set looks like the odd one out and is not. Around two and three, being given a real job is more interesting than any toy, and a child-sized brush is the least patronising way to hand one over.

What we would skip this year
The reproduction of the toy you had. This is the nostalgia trap. You remember the feeling of that Christmas, not the toy, and the toy cannot deliver the feeling. Buy it if you want it, but buy it knowing that.
Wooden versions of electronic toys. A wooden tablet is still a tablet-shaped thing that does nothing. The point of these toys is open play, not a nicer material wrapped round the same idea.
